Effect of the weighted blanket

The deep pressure exerted by the weight has a relaxing effect on joints, muscles, and tendons. This effect is also known as “Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation” because it applies gentle yet firm and even pressure to the body. This helps to relax both physically and internally. Our body awareness improves as well. Additionally, it triggers the release of serotonin hormone while reducing cortisol levels (the so-called stress hormone). Deep pressure signals the body a sense of security and confidence..

Research

Currently, there are still few studies available that scientifically confirm the effectiveness of weighted blankets. One reason for this is the challenge of measuring an individual’s well-being in tests. Nevertheless, two important studies regarding their effects come from Sweden, where researchers conducted a study showing that sleeping under a weighted blanket reduces the severity of insomnia, improves sleep, and decreases daytime sleepiness. The results of this study were published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine on September 15, 2020. The second important study, published on July 3, 2022, in the Journal of Sleep Research, is the first to suggest that using a weighted blanket may lead to increased release of melatonin before sleep.
